Segmented life

29 02 2008

Now these two weeks saw some ups and downs:
at first, my shares of the Mainstaululu-advertising-Network droppend with the uncertainty
of LL-Lab’s new policy regarding spam.
Secon: After my recovery from my personal >>nose-plague<<, my RL-boss was so kind to shove a heap of workload on my desk, which was able to keep me from my anydaywork and finally I had to teach some people in law-classes.

So, when old Friday came around, I was all fed up, while not being able to enter SL for more than two hours all week.

Now that my week had been segmented already, I started to dig up an old idea, which roamed
around my mind for quite some time: shop segments which could be copied and combined to form
a mall or a shopping-street.

While just having finished >>The Majestic<<, I decided to keep that very style for the new
designs as well.
Now I was all set to do, what I have been doing all week: neglecting my anyday-work to have some time of pure fun and contemplation while building.

When finished, I had attained two results.
First: I need more prims! I am eager to set these on a life-display as well and -oh dear-
I am short on prims, so I went over to a new tierlevel and started to buy whatever land was left on Dhaulagiri to realize my idea.

Second result was that I was much more relaxed after the weekend. It’s good to create some content now and then instead of doing admin-work for the shop.

Another idea, I had with buying more land was to refinance a bit of the whole thing by showing my new designs ‘in action’, which means, I rent them out to tennants for not too much money to cover some of the land-tierfee. Due to the 19% VAT I pay this wont work out
on the perspective of huge earnings, but it will help nevertheless.
But then again: where to get more prims for doing so?

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions …*sigh* back to admin work.:)

Product: Vintage Mall ‘ The Majestic’

21 02 2008

One of the purposes of this blog is to announce and -of course- promote products, I created and offer at my shop. Well, I guess now is a good time to start to do so.

I have already created quite a bunch of vintage shops, homes, a castle and miscellaneous gadgets, but I intend to only spotlight one or two of them and concentrate on upcoming products.

Comments on any product will be highly appreciated. For one reason, this helps me to do better products in the future and for another: I like to hear if somebody tells me that what i do is good:)

Now as for the ‘Majestic’ – Mall design, I maybe should start with the technical data:

The Majestic

I built this structure because I just bought the location on Dhaulagiri and needed something new to offer my things in.

The Majestic 2The old warehouse, I used was fine and you will find it among my products in the shop, but it was simply not fitting my L-shaped land without taking some of the atmoshpere. The Majestic 4

So I came up with some new idea, I had bouncing round my head for quite some time.

This idea and the fact that i always wanted to experiment about the possibilities of huge prims, enabled me to constrruct this one out of only 130 prims which leaves you only with the problem of footprint(to any troll-feeders: yes i know about the huge prim-debate that has been going on for several years now and due to the jump in server technology, I am of the opinion that LL would do good to invent larger prims that can be modified properly).

I wanted something bright and shiny but also with what I call ‘the-golden-age-look’. So I took some nice terracotta-wallpaper-texture, made it semi-reflective and attained the look it has now and which still blows me away when I watch it during sundown or dawn-phase without even using windlight.

The Majestic 3

I intend to do some more in that look, just to see where it leads me. But that will be a job for the time, when I boxed up all the stuff i have finished in my pocket.

The Majestic 5A structure this big always has some temple-like character, so the rezbox, I ship it in holds the open-to all-sides design and an additional rezbox with separator-elements, shopsign-dummies and prims that turn the arches into alcovens by closing the walls on three of the four sides of the building.

This way you can separate the whole building into 24 smaller shops to rent out with even some space left in the middle.  You only need to place that rezbox in the yellow marker in the middle of the gound floor and rez the additional config with the usual-3-click-technique, you are used from rezboxes all out SL.

Saying that, reminds me that I had loads of requests for the effects of the HAVOC 4 upgrade. I use the 1.11 version of the omega rez-locus scripts on all my buildings which on the one hand works fine with HAVOC and on the other hand enables you to rez multiple buildings from different boxes which do not interfere with each other, which was extremely annoying, when you worked on a sim-wide-level, placing structures to see how they look.

But back to the building:

Like all my buildings, the ‘Majestic’ comes with mod- and copy-permissions so you can adapt it to your needs at any time.

In the present style, I think it will do good as a small mall, a huge shop, a temple or even as club. If you have the intentions to use it as a home, please remark, that there are no bathroom facilities included;)

Weekend, Adfarms and the Flu

17 02 2008

Its Sunday and I spent most of my weekend on the couch being ill.But while trumpeting in Hankerchiefs I luckily found time to update the last rezboxes (long life to the laptop!). cal.jpgThey are now up-to-date to not produce a puzzle instead of a building when used on HAVOC-servers.  Also I continued to decorate the new Mainstore at Dhaulaghiri. Being sick has its advantages there *smirk*.

Now while being a mothership for viruses in general, I also scrolled the LL blog and found the post about another one of LL’s masterpieces.

The new Anti-Spam-policy.

Finally LL seems to have realized that there are adfarms in SL. For the unenlightened: An adfarm is normally a 512 squaremeter parcel of land, which is bought by some smartass, that parcels it into 16 sqm pieces and sets up ugly columns of advetising, ruining the skyline. So far so bad.

Betting on the effect that someone might be willing to pay for having this piece of goo out of his sight, the adfarmer sets the small parcels for sale on a rate which isnt nearly described by ridiculous. I have one such thing near my mainstore (see pic).

cal2.jpg

Now,  -as always – LL overdraws the whole thing. In an interview, Harry Linden rencently stated, that , due to the new policy even normal ‘For Sale’ signs can and their owners can be possibly banned if repeating their offence.

What’s the point here? The thing is, there we have the new blow to economy going into start positions here.

LL obviously hasnt thought about whom they also blow with this. There are advertising-companies in SL, that keep advertising-columns inworld on 512 parcels which they offer over the normal market price so they are not bought of right away or taken over by other ad-companies. These Adcolumns are normally well designed things that no not disrupt the view of the landscape as the everyday adfarm does. Will they and their shareholders go down the drain with this?

And what ebout Real Estate companies? They regularily set land for sale and place a marker on it to announce it. Now if you deem the price for this to high, you simply report them as spammers?. Nice.

cal3.jpgYes, I see adfarming as a serious harassment to everyone and as a factor that takes value out of each neighbourhood, but in my opinion, LL continues its policy to cut down economy with this by  simply not clearly defining, where spam begins.

So people will be freightened out of landsales or advertising their services in SL. Overruling takes the air from economy, but this seems to be a fact that LL will only see after more businesspeople take their ventures out of SL and try some other platforms.

I think I will follow the call of some real estate companies here and get the ball back. The method is easy. Simply fill an abuse report for any for-sale-marker you see, if adfarm or normal real estate and clog LL’s servers. It worked yesterday for of my 25 reports 10 where returned in a denial-of-service error.

Maybe this shakes them up.

Time for my pills.

The discovery of “slow”

8 02 2008

After two days of updating rezboxes, I made a few philosophical experiences:

At first, I finally met a player who obviously gives a damn about what i call the “Barbie & Kenification” in SL.

He created a Diogenes-Avatar, an old man with a lamp and a little cup, with bare feet and a toga. Playing a grumpy old AV myself while being not that old (yes, I know 37 is Methusalem-like with some kids today), I instantly made friends with him and created him a barrel with some sitting pose in it as a home.

The second experience was to witness the timetravel, SL makes possible. While inworld, no more time floats by than you need to produce something from your inv to the ground, in, in RL, time stretches painfully over multiple minutes. Einstein would have gone nuts over this fabululous example for relativity!.

LL was so kind to provide this effect with a device called “asset-server”.

This miraculous device is able to bend time in SL and that way you can drink a comfortable and relaxed cup of coffee while avoiding the usual haste when trying to bring things thro and fro from and to your inventory.

No more stress, because you would have to stick on screen to see what happens at every second. These timebends allow you a far mor relaxed RL while in SL your business slows down that much, you would neither earn money nor be able to work for it as a builder.

Thank you LL.
